Since commencing my studies in the Master’s program at the Graduate Institute of Biomedical Engineering (National Cheng Kung University) in 1996, I have devoted 28 years to advancing this field.
My early academic pursuits centered on biomedical sensing, during which I learned from esteemed professors and experts. Subsequently, I joined the National Science Council (NSC), where I dedicated myself to providing comprehensive support and services to optoelectronics and biomedical engineering scholars. While at the NSC, I concurrently pursued a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at National Taiwan University. This academic endeavor allowed me to expand my research into biomaterials and tissue engineering. I successfully integrated biomaterials into biomedical sensing technologies, significantly enhancing sensing performance. This advancement has been particularly impactful for trace-amount specimen detection and presents promising applications in developing intelligent medical devices.
At the past decade at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, my research initially focused on applying biomedical sensing technologies to early cancer detection. However, inspired by personal experience with my 85-year-old mother, who exhibits mild dementia, I redirected my focus toward the early detection and rapid screening of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). During this period, our team successfully secured a U.S. patent for a method that uses beta-amyloid 40 to 42 concentration ratio as a rapid screening tool for AD. Remarkably, the patent was granted within just nine months of application. Additionally, our published research was featured twice as the cover illustration of Analytical Chemistry within six months, underscoring the significance of our findings.
Recently, I have been serving as an associate professor at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the Department of Biological Science and Technology, the College of Artificial Intelligence, and the International Ph.D. Program in Photonics at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University.
The future prospects of our laboratory include leveraging early detection technologies to delay or even prevent the onset of dementia. Moreover, in the field of geriatric medicine, beyond enabling early diagnosis, these sensing technologies can also be utilized for the scientific evaluation of treatment efficacy. Furthermore, inspired by personal experiences, our biomedical sensing innovations aim to address real-world healthcare challenges and ultimately make a meaningful contribution to improving human health.

Faisal Asadi is a Ph.D. student  in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at National Yang-Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU), Taiwan, and a lecturer at the School of Computer Science at BINUS University in Indonesia.
His research focuses on Artificial Intelligence in Medicine, Digital Health, and Bioinformatics, and he holds a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Ming-Chi University of Technology (MCUT), graduating summa cum laude in 2020, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Informatics Engineering from the State Islamic University of Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau, Indonesia, earned in 2017.
Faisal has held research and teaching positions at BINUS University’s Bioinformatics and Data Science Research Center (BDSRC) and the Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Indonesia, and he actively reviews for the Journal of Pathology Informatics and the International Conference on Biospheric Harmony (ICOBAR).
